Great Egret

Large, lanky, long-necked white egret. Widespread and fairly common across the globe. Occurs in any shallow wetland, including ponds, marshes, and tidal mudflats. Slowly stalks prey in shallow water.

Rainbow Lorikeet

The Rainbow Lorikeet is unmistakable with its bright red beak and colourful plumage. Both sexes look alike, with a blue (mauve) head and belly, green wings, tail and back, and an orange/yellow breast. They are often seen in loud and fast-moving flocks, or in communal roosts at dusk. We saw these beautiful birds in Katherine Gorge

The great bowerbird (Chlamydera nuchalis) is a common and conspicuous resident of northern Australia

Wangi Falls Bat

At the beautiful Wangi Falls in Litchfield Park, these fruit bats sleep in the trees surrounding the falls.

Jim Jim Falls

Whether the falls are raging with water in the 'Wet' season, or the merest trickle in the 'Dry', this majestic waterfall is a sight to behold. As Kakadu’s biggest waterfall, set in the red ochre of the Arnhem Land escarpment and boasting white sandy beaches and crystal clear water, it is worth the 900 metre very difficult walk through a monsoon forest and over boulders to arrive at a deep plunge pool surrounded by spectacular 150 metre high cliffs. When we arrived here in August, it was dry (obviously)

Nankeen Night-Heron

Because it spends much of the day roosting hidden among dense foliage, only emerging in the twilight, the Nankeen Night-Heron is generally under-reported. Nevertheless, they occur throughout eastern and northern Australia, as well as in the western half of Western Australia.

Azure Kingfisher

The tiny, colourful and highly elusive azure kingfisher is found around the edges of most Kakadu waterways. This one was seen during our fantastic Yellow Water Cruise.

Willie Wagtail

The Willie Wagtail (Rhipidura leucophrys), also spelt Willy Wagtail is the largest of the group of Australian fantails, that are often seen flitting about, whilst constantly wagging the tail feather from side to side. This one was seen in Arnhem Land.

Australian Darter

I've always wanted to take a photo of one of these birds. Darters have feathers whose structure is less waterproof, and this adaptation allows them to pursue their prey underwater with greater ease. It comes at a cost, however; they must dry their feathers after wetting them, and spend plenty of time in the sun not only to dry their feathers but to keep their body temperatures high.

The White-bellied Sea-Eagle is the second largest raptor found in Australia.

Saltie

The saltwater crocodile is the king of all 27 species of crocodilian. They grow to be the largest, most fierce and most feared reptile on the planet! These impressive carnivores are capable of reaching up to seven metres in length and weighing over 1,000 kilograms.

Maguk Waterfall

Previously known as Barramundi Gorge, Maguk is a gorgeous swimming hole of crystal clear water that is fed by a waterfall. To get here though you will need to take your four-wheel drive offroad, as you often do in country such as Kakadu, and then take a short hike before you will get to the gorge. It is a 2km return hike, that is not as easy as they want you to believe. A path, marked only by the occasional arrow in the rock, will lead you through “monsoon forest”, over jagged rocks, through the river (which may have crocs in) and along its sandy, sometimes even beach-like banks
