The Lost City

The Redwoods

This remarkable stand of the world’s tallest tree species have thrived in Otway soil, far from their native California. Towering on the sheltered river flat at the Aire Valley Plantation, these Sequoia Sempervirens Trees were originally planted in 1936 by Victorian foresters for experimental purposes. While still in their youthful growth phase, the Otway Redwoods may one day claim the title of tallest trees in the world

Lake Elizabeth

When flooding caused a landslide in the area over fifty years ago, this valley and forest were covered by water and a lake, forming what is now known as Lake Elizabeth

Rainbow Bee-eater

The Rainbow Bee-Eater is a spectacular bird. With its green, blue, chestnut and yellow plumage, its slim build, slender curved bill and distinctive streamers that extend from the end of its tail, it is simply beautiful.

Great Egret

Large, lanky, long-necked white egret. Widespread and fairly common across the globe. Occurs in any shallow wetland, including ponds, marshes, and tidal mudflats. Slowly stalks prey in shallow water.

Rainbow Lorikeet

The Rainbow Lorikeet is unmistakable with its bright red beak and colourful plumage. Both sexes look alike, with a blue (mauve) head and belly, green wings, tail and back, and an orange/yellow breast. They are often seen in loud and fast-moving flocks, or in communal roosts at dusk. We saw these beautiful birds in Katherine Gorge

Great Bowerbird

The great bowerbird (Chlamydera nuchalis) is a common and conspicuous resident of northern Australia

Wangi Falls Bat

At the beautiful Wangi Falls in Litchfield Park, these fruit bats sleep in the trees surrounding the falls.

Jim Jim Falls

Whether the falls are raging with water in the 'Wet' season, or the merest trickle in the 'Dry', this majestic waterfall is a sight to behold. As Kakadu’s biggest waterfall, set in the red ochre of the Arnhem Land escarpment and boasting white sandy beaches and crystal clear water, it is worth the 900 metre very difficult walk through a monsoon forest and over boulders to arrive at a deep plunge pool surrounded by spectacular 150 metre high cliffs. When we arrived here in August, it was dry (obviously)

Buley Rockhole

Buley Rockhole is set among several small, rapid flowing streams in Litchfield National Park. The water ranges from small deep plunge pools to shallow rock pools.

Nankeen Night-Heron

Because it spends much of the day roosting hidden among dense foliage, only emerging in the twilight, the Nankeen Night-Heron is generally under-reported. Nevertheless, they occur throughout eastern and northern Australia, as well as in the western half of Western Australia.

Azure Kingfisher

The tiny, colourful and highly elusive azure kingfisher is found around the edges of most Kakadu waterways. This one was seen during our fantastic Yellow Water Cruise.

Willie Wagtail

The Willie Wagtail (Rhipidura leucophrys), also spelt Willy Wagtail is the largest of the group of Australian fantails, that are often seen flitting about, whilst constantly wagging the tail feather from side to side. This one was seen in Arnhem Land.

We saw quite a few of the great bowerbird while camping in Arnhem Land.

Comb-crested Jacana

The Comb-crested Jacana, also known as the Lotus bird, is a highly distinctive, medium-sized waterbird, with long legs and exceptionally long toes that allow the bird to walk on floating vegetation, which may sometimes be partly submerged, giving the impression of the bird walking on water.

The Plumed Whistling-Duck is one of two whistling or tree ducks found in Australia. It has beautiful colouring

Australian Darter

I've always wanted to take a photo of one of these birds. Darters have feathers whose structure is less waterproof, and this adaptation allows them to pursue their prey underwater with greater ease. It comes at a cost, however; they must dry their feathers after wetting them, and spend plenty of time in the sun not only to dry their feathers but to keep their body temperatures high.

White-bellied Sea-Eagle

The White-bellied Sea-Eagle is the second largest raptor found in Australia.
